Four things to know this Friday

Hello, my lovelies. Can we talk about Venus for a second? Because she is making all of us suffer right now, and if you’ve felt like everything from your love life to your WiFi has been slightly cursed lately, you are not imagining things. Mercury gets all the blame, but Venus retrograde has main character energy too, apparently.

On a more grounded note, remember all those projects I kept teasing? There’s actual, concrete movement happening on them now, finally past the “in the works” stage and into something real. I’ll be sharing more very soon, promise.

Speaking of things in motion: a lot of improvements are coming to the website, so if you land on it in the next little while and something looks slightly different, that’s intentional, not broken.

Fair warning, I’ll be absent from the newsletter next week. Think of it as me taking my own advice on building a more sustainable rhythm rather than running on empty.

F for Facts

Radical acts of slowing down, fall movies to keep on your radar, and how to set boundaries with your Gen Z employees.

F for Fashion / Beauty

New York Fashion Week officially ran from Thursday, September 10 through Tuesday, September 15, bringing established American powerhouses, international names, returning favorites and an interesting new generation of designers into one compressed six-day stretch, with 70 runway shows and presentations on the CFDA calendar. The biggest storyline for me? The “undone” girl. Designers like Altuzarra, Christian Cowan, and Zoe Gustavia Anna Whalen sent looks down the runway with exposed, sometimes unhooked undergarments and straps hanging off the shoulder, leaning into an effortless, alluring déshabillé feel, while Coach and Prabal Gurung translated the same idea into muslin looks with unfinished hems. It’s giving “I threw this together” but make it couture-level intentional, very my aesthetic, honestly, as per the Zoe report. There was also a real split in energy: Brandon Maxwell, Fforme, Prabal Gurung, and even Ralph Lauren went minimalist, focusing on silhouette and fabric with barely-there embellishments, while Monse, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, and Thom Browne went full maximalist, so basically, wherever your mood lives this season, NYFW had a lane for you as per Daily Front Row.

Some debuts and comebacks worth noting: Henry Zankov made his debut as creative director at Diane von Furstenberg, Magda Butrym crossed the pond from Paris to show in New York for the first time and open her first US store in Soho, and Tommy Hilfiger, Thom Browne, and threeASFOUR all returned to the calendar after taking breaks. And because NYFW loves an anniversary, Coach celebrated 85 years, Carolina Herrera is five years out from her 50th, and Tibi hit the 30-year mark.

Meanwhile, Madrid quietly leveled up. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid geared up for its 84th edition, running September 14 to 19, held entirely outside the Ifema exhibition centre for the first time. The main program shifted to the Communication and Arts campus at Nebrija University, with additional shows staged at spots like Palacio de Cibeles and the Crystal Palace greenhouse in Arganzuela, the city’s own way of saying fashion doesn’t need four walls to make an impact. This edition also marked the 10th anniversary of Palomo and the return of names like Moisés Nieto and Alvarno, with Hannibal Laguna receiving the National Designer Award to mark his brand’s 40th anniversary.
